Gandikota acquired its name from the picturesque gorge (called Gandi in Telugu) formed between the Erramalai hills, which are also called the Gandikota hills. A deep valley and impassable hills with massive boulders of red granite, reminding one of the Grand Canyon, surround the fort, situated amid wild forests. The gorge formation is such that the Pennar river flows about 90 metres below on the western and northern sides and is said to have offered strong natural defense to the Kakatiya, Vijayanagar and Qutub Shahi kings who ruled from the fort.

From the top of the fort, you can have a breathtakingly panoramic view of the surrounding forests and valleys. Nearby, is the picturesque Mylavaram Dam which is a popular picnic spot because of the sparkling waters, lush trees and cool breeze, which make you want to stretch out and relax. This will be place to retire in the night

Gandikota fort is awesome location, the gorges and the penna river were simply awesome - just couldn't take my eyes of them. We visited the temples, mosque and the granary - a marvell of old architecture. This trek was the mother of all weekend Treks. The Terrain was rough with stones, shrubs and thorns with varying ups and downs on the hills as we climbed till 6 kms up. We carried along 80 lt water, 30 kg firewood, 20 kg food stuff, 25 kg tents, 5 kg of rope all evenly distributed among all. Everyone including the first timers did exceptionally well, The girls cooked some delicious dinner, the breakfast and quick lunch was good. swimming in mylvaram damn took off all the fatigue and we were fresh again as we approached our way back to Hyderabad.
    •  Camping out, cooking, trekking, bouldering ... musicians...this trek had it all...not to mention an awesome location... the view of the gorge was amazing... :)
    •  I've learnt as a newbee trekker that flexing your mind to changing plans and circumstances is as important as flexing your muscles for trekking and climbing. Needless to say, it was memorable and easy to say - not a moment of the 60hrs will be forgotten. The Adventure started with pre-trek injuries, forgotten +1's, missing the train and long talks on Objectivism. Day 1 was fascinating - how almost everyone tried his/her best to keep the trek at it's best - whether to help make things get better or lay low when intervention was unnecessary. Day 2 was exciting as God-awesome! Bus-rides, auto-rides, cook-outs and eat-outs were all additional attractions to the wonderful experience of walking through nomadic land, climbing rocks, swimming and not-to-be-forgotten "making new friends".
