The trek to Goyko offers an alternative to the traditional Everest base camp trek. From Goyko Ri, more of Everest itself is visible than from Kala Pattar above Gorak Shep (see Everest Base Camp Trek). The mountains are more spectacular, the Ngozumpa Glacier is the largest in the Nepal Himalaya and, from a ridge above Goyko, four 8000-meter peaks (Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu) are visible. The view of the tremendous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang (7922m) is one of the most dramatic panoramas in Khumbu. This trek is less crowded then the Everest base camp trek.
The Trek is strenuous but does not require that you have any previous trekking or mountaineering experience. you should be in good physical condition and be able to hike for 5-6 hours everyday over hilly terrain with a light day pack. A Certificate of recognition will be given to all participants who complete the trek mentioning the distance covered.
Once you get to Kathmandu - we will take a local bus to Jiri. This is a small village at the end of the road. From here it is about a 21 day trek with proper acclimatization to the Gokyo region and back to Kathmandu by flight
we will go up till Gokyo from Jiri for three reasons:
1 - You will have a chance to walk through one of the most lush and beautiful lowland areas in Nepal. This is an area that a lot of trekkers miss when flying to Lukla. You will also cross over two high passes with excellent views in all directions.
2 - By taking 2 weeks to arrive in the Khumbu and having already crossed over two high passes you will be better acclimatized once you arrive in the high altitude area. You will enjoy this more as you will be huffing and puffing less.
3 - You will be following the route taken by most of the early expeditions. There is a lot of history along that path, why not soak it up. You will also have the bragging rights that you did the same route as Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay
